Police Misconduct

Police misconduct can become a criminal matter. The most commonly alleged kind of police misconduct is police brutality, sometimes also called "excessive force." But this is only one way that misconduct can occur.

Police misconduct also includes accepting bribes, improper search and seizure, harassment and acts of racism alleged to have been perpetrated by law enforcement.

If a police officer or peace officer is accused of misconduct, the consequences can be immediate and life-changing. The officer may be suspended immediately, often without pay pending the outcome of the case. The officer may be publiclly reviled.

Depending on the locale where the police misconduct is alleged to have occurred, a jury may be more or less pre-disposed on one side over the other.
