Kidnapping Cases

A kidnapping crime occurs if a person has unlawfully removed or restrained from movement another person without their consent.

Kidnapping is a serious offence. The FBI may become involved in a kidnapping case. There is a Federal Kidnapping Statute, Title 18 U.S.C. Section 1201, and the FBI may join state and local authorities to help resolve a kidnapping case.

Kidnappings often are perpetrated by family members or people known to one another, not merely strangers.

According to the United States Department of Justice, family-member kidnapping involve nearly 200,000 children every year. While most kidnappings occur because of custody disputes, it is still considered unlawful. 98% of the children are safely returned to their homes.
