Harassment

Harassment can occur through a combination of words and conduct that serve no legitimate purpose but to irritate, annoy, alarm, or cause emotional distress.

There has always been a relation between criminal harassment and the civil tort of sexual harassment. However, there are similarities and differences. If you've been charged with criminal harassment that involves allegations of sexual touching, this is exceptionally serious; guilt or innocence can often appear to be a secondary concern of the justice system. Unfortunately, the charge itself can be devastating.

Harassment need not be sexual in nature. In fact, the defendant doesn't even have to be in the physical presence of the victim. For example, using a cell phone to leave harassing messages that serve no legitimate purpose can cause a person to be arrested for harassment.
